In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Audemars Piguet serial numbers, including how to locate them and  how to decode them in order to date an Audemars Piguet (AP) watch.

Where Can I Find My Audemars Piguet Serial Number?

Each watch manufactured by Audemars Piguet has a unique serial number, which you will find on the case back. You will also find it on your warranty card and certificate.

Audemars Piguet produces approximately 40,000 watches each year, and each timepiece is assigned a unique serial number located on the caseback.

Since 1975, the serial numbering system has included a letter prefix, which changes after every 100,000 watches produced. By taking into account the annual production of around 40,000 watches, we can estimate that the letter will typically change every two and a half to three years.

This system allows us to roughly estimate the year of manufacture by comparing the serial number on your watch to others. For example, a watch with a serial number that follows a previous one can generally be assumed to have been made around three years after the last one in the sequence.

Understanding Rolex Serial Numbers: How to Date a Rolex Watch

Rolex watches are not only known for their exceptional craftsmanship, luxury, and precision, but also for the unique serial numbers they carry. These serial numbers are not just random digits—they hold valuable information about the watch including its production year. In this blog post, we will explore how to read Rolex serial numbers and how you can use them to date your Rolex watch.

What is a Rolex Serial Number?

A Rolex serial number is a unique identifier that Rolex assigns to each watch it manufactures. Located between the lugs of the case, usually at the 6 o'clock position, the serial number offers important information regarding the production year and sometimes the specific model variation. This serial number allows collectors, buyers, and sellers to trace the history of a Rolex and confirm its authenticity.

Where to Find the Serial Number on a Rolex?

For most Rolex models, you can find the serial number engraved between the lugs at the 6 o’clock position of the watch. You may need to remove the bracelet to view it clearly, as it is typically hidden underneath. For newer models, Rolex laser engraves the serial number on the rehaut between the sapphire crystal and the dial on the 6 o'clock side.

Rolex Manufacture Date Look Up Tool & Chart

Understanding the production year of your Rolex watch is an essential part of its value and history. Rolex serial numbers offer a simple way to identify the year your watch was made. Here's a Rolex serial number chart that provides an approximate year of manufacture based on the serial number.

Rolex Serial Number Chart

How to Use This Chart

To determine the approximate manufacture year of your Rolex:

  1. Locate the Serial Number: Remove the bracelet from your Rolex and look for the serial number engraved on the case, typically located between the 6 o’clock lugs.  For newer models, Rolex laser engraves the serial number on the rehaut between the sapphire crystal and the dial on the 6 o'clock side.

  2. Match the Serial Number: Find the closest match on the chart. The first digit or letter of the serial number will give you a range of years in which your Rolex was produced.

  3. Estimate the Year: Use the chart to determine the production year of your Rolex based on the serial number.
