When Rolex released their teaser video to BaselWorld 2014, everyone who viewed the video talked about the fine fluted bezel, the apparent colour of rose gold, the perhaps blatant imagery of the moon and the lack of the Cyclops on the Crystal. What most people did not realise and only a few of the eagle eyed amongst us did, was that there was two watches shown to us on the video however it is the “fluted bezel” watch that is shown for the longer duration of time. The other watch was shown to us first but only a small glimpse, blink and you’ll miss it. The appearance of this watch was fairly thick in size with a flat bezel and again no Cyclops.
This was another watch that was being talked about online before the official announcement on the 26th March at BaselWorld 2014 and once again there were many spot on in deciphering where Rolex had seen another gap in their market. The Rolex Submariner is a timeless classic for Rolex however it is not for everyone as there are some out there that think the watch just isn’t substantial enough for proper diving or perhaps do not like the Cyclops date bubble. There are also those out there who do not like the bulk of the Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller which was released in 2008 as a replacement of the Rolex Sea-Dweller. It was after this replacement of the Sea-Dweller that demand for this model seemed to increase with current owners looking at getting very good prices indeed for a watch Rolex had decided to discontinue.
Could Rolex have one again been controlling the supply and demand of their watches beyond point of sale to now in the second hand market? Driving desire for a watch that people now wanted hold of that Rolex no longer supplied? It’s the 26th March 2014 and we are currently admiring another release from Rolex at BaselWorld 2014, the Sea-Dweller 4000 116600. A classic has been reborn and maintains all the characteristics of its predecessor but now boasts a better Oyster case, bracelet and Ceramic bezel.
The Sea-Dweller 4000 will perhaps be the most highly sort after Rolex release from BaselWorld 2014 and with a rough guide price of £7000 many will be putting their names down to avoid waiting too long for such an iconic watch.
