We all knew to expect something spectacular for Baselworld 2013 with it being a special occasion for a few brands however it was Rolex in particular who were celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their figure head watch, the Cosmograph Daytona. The usual rumours were circulating as ever when there is a possible change to the Daytona, potential oversized version, dated option or perhaps the inclusion of ceramic bezels on other models. What I imagine a lot of people did not expect was an absolute showstopper of a piece that was to leave watch lovers breathless and eager in anticipation to see this beauty in the flesh.
The Daytona has been made in all manners of executions before with steel, bi-metal and solid gold pieces on offer all with different dial options available. We have even seen fancy versions with multi coloured “Rainbow” bezels and leopard print dials; however it had never been made before in Platinum, the pinnacle of all metals.
All across the world watch lovers waited with baited breath for the unveiling of the watch to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Daytona, first released in 1963. What they saw was the Cosmograph Daytona 116506 50th Anniversary in Platinum, an exquisite watch to celebrate a true icon rich with history and prestige. All the correct ingredients were there with none of the features changed in anyway keeping a classic in its true form and appeal. The first noticeable attributes to the 116506 are the dial in its ice blue colour which immediately indicates that it has been encased in Platinum as this being one of the main choices of dial colour by Rolex when using this precious metal. Size wise the watch remains the same 40mm with Rolex ignoring growing calls from some enthusiasts who now require an increased version of the 60s icon. Ceramic bezels are not a new idea from Rolex and we have already seen them on the 116515LN but what we haven’t seen was the gorgeous chestnut brown colour Rolex decided to place onto their Anniversary watch.
It is now almost a year on since we witnessed the unveiling of the 116506 Platinum Daytona yet it still today remains as hot as the day it was announced. Time will pass quickly no doubt until we are looking at the 75th anniversary, but one thing is for sure, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116506 50h Anniversary Platinum will continue to exist for many years to come as a true Daytona legend, and one that stands shoulder to shoulder with its siblings in a variety of forms that collate into a watch dynasty.
