Out of the murky depths of 1953 arose the Rolex Submariner, developed out of necessity during this scuba diving era. It started life gracing the hands of the diving elite being the first wristwatch to be water resistant to 100m to adorning the wrist of the world’s most loved Secret Agent with its rugged build and aesthetic appeal.
A watch that was good enough for James Bond would undoubtedly be fine for under water exploration, and it was. With a new designed rigorous oyster case coupled with a resilient oyster bracelet the watch became an essential tool for the divers of the 1950s. The large clear hour markers ensured readability even in harsh conditions and the unidirectional rotatable bezel proved a lifesaving addition for a diver conscious of dive time and timing of decompression stops.
In over 60 years of production, the simple yet functional look of the Rolex Submariner remains relatively unchanged. The Oyster bracelet has become more solid and the Oyster case thicker whilst the bezel has been changed for a Cerachrom version which has again improved efficiency with its virtual scratch resistant qualities. The mechanical self-winding movement has also been improved over the years as has the overall water resistance, now being able to withstand up to 300m to fall nicely in line with the requirements of today’s modern day diver.
Today’s executions also come in various options from steel with black or green dials through bi-metals with black or blue to stunning gold pieces again in black or blue.
